Board and senior managerial effectiveness
- Independent review of the management and governance of a NHS Hospital Trust in south west England
- Devised and led board development programmes focusing on future strategy and board effectiveness for NHS trusts applying for foundation trust status in south eastern, central and north western England.
- Devised and led board and organisational development programmes for numerous primary care trusts with an emphasis on developing skills for world class commissioning.
- Undertaken management audits in health related organisations and delivered follow up organisational development programmes.
- Personal coaching of chief executives, executive directors and consultant medical staff of NHS trusts and primary care organisations in England and Wales.
Governance Arrangements
- Led three reviews of critical incidents, including those that have attracted national publicity in NHS trusts and primary care trusts, including examination of trust governance arrangements.
- Assessed the organisational capability of a national NHS leadership and modernisation organisation in Wales.
- Reviewed the clinical and managerial governance arrangements of a transplant unit in a foundation trust.
Financial and Information Management
- Reviewed the organisation and management of the informatics service at an NHS foundation trust
- Led a review of the financial management of a major health system in central England.
- Independent chair of a programme board to quality assure the achievement of major efficiency savings in Northern Ireland’s biggest healthcare provider.
Leadership and leadership development
- Led a national procurement for the Chief Executive in England to create a framework of leadership development providers for the English NHS after drafting the tender specification requirements.
- Commissioned on behalf of a strategic health authority in England a new approach to the leadership development of executive directors and prospective chief executives of providing and commissioning organisations.
- Reviewed clinical engagement systems and processes in a large acute hospital foundation trust.
- Advisor on leadership development strategies to two strategic health authorities.
Strategic Development
- Led the establishment of an academic health science partnership embracing one of the top 10 universities in the world and four university NHS trusts in London.
- Led for the Welsh Assembly Government an independent inquiry into the outcome of a contentious public consultation on changes to acute hospital services in South Wales.
- Assessed, as part of a small team for the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit, the organisational capability of the Crown Prosecution Service for England and Wales.
- Advised the Auditor General for Wales on a review of the Welsh Ambulance Service.
- Reviewed the management of human resource issues undertaken by all strategic health authorities during the 2006 reorganisation of the NHS in England.
- Led a review in central England on strategic organisational and service options across secondary care services.
- Worked with the senior executive team in a large charitable organisation to review strategic direction and develop a five year business plan.
- Assessed the feasibility for co-locating ambulance control alongside control centres police and fire and rescue services in North Wales.
